For our latest Employee Spotlight, we had the opportunity to sit down with our hard-working Engineering Director, Ehsan Alavi, to learn more about him and his role at Phoenix Mecano.
What is your role at Phoenix Mecano?
Director of Engineering for TEFELEN. My role is to direct the technology transfer of products that are new to the U.S. from our international partners.
What are your hopes for our industry or company?
To direct as many diverse and innovative electrical distribution projects for TEFELEN as I can, such as projects within the utility and civil industries (untouched areas for our type of product).
What do you like most about your job?
The environment and the people I work with. The environment is very friendly and my coworkers are very supportive to me.
Before working at Phoenix Mecano, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?The most interesting time of my life was when I had three full time roles. I was an assistant professor for “Universiti Teknologi Malaysa (UTM)”, an Engineering Consultant for Powerwell Co. while completing my doctorate studies at UTM. I really understood the quote ‘Practice Makes Perfect’ during this challenging time because if I wanted to be good, I had to do as much as I could.
What do you like most about Phoenix Mecano?
The management, discipline, and strategy. The management team is very open-minded and flexible; they take into account ideas that support company growth. The company as a whole is very well organized. Anything you want (compared to other employers), there is a plan outlined to achieve it. While other companies have limitations or barriers, the possibilities for growth here seem to be endless.
What has been your favorite project at Phoenix Mecano?
The NSRP project for the U.S. Navy. This is an amazing project for Tefelen because it’s the qualification assessment of Tefelen products for possible utilization within U.S. Navy Ships. This would be a game-changer for Tefelen.
What is on your wish list for the next 10 years with Phoenix Mecano?
I would like Tefelen to be completely independent with more projects and in turn, have a much bigger facility space and more manpower.
Best vacation you’ve been on?
Tiuman Island, Malaysia. It was a very interesting island. The sea was shallow with clear water. You could see all of the beautiful fish and coral reef. You could snorkel and see everything so clearly. The coral reef was amazing!
Do you have a favorite quote?
“Knowledge is Power”
If given a chance, who would you like to be for a day?
Professor Mahmoud Hessabi, who was an Iranian physicist and senator. He was the Minister of Education for Iran from 1951 to 1952.
If you could witness any historical event, what would you want to see?
The Persian Constitutional Revolution (1905-1911) because at that time, people didn’t have freedom to choose. This led to the establishment of a parliament in Persia.
Three words to best describe you:
Perseverance. Optimistic. Driven (to learn and do more).
What’s the last joke you recall?
Why don’t scientists trust atoms? Because they make up everything.
And here are some thoughts on Ehsan, straight from Phoenix Mecano CEO Philip Brown: “There is something very special about Ehsan and the way others respond to him. He is patient, measured, dedicated and absolutely a SME passionate about educating others and training his team. He is genuine, kind and others know immediately after speaking with him that he is not only a subject matter expert in his field but he is a teacher, a professor if you will, to anyone with a desire to learn about Tefelen or our electrical distribution systems.”
There’s more to being a Phoenix Mecano team member than the work itself. It takes people with different ideas, strengths, interests, and cultural backgrounds to make our company succeed. We hope you enjoyed learning more about Ehsan and we can’t wait to bring you more ‘Spotlights’ in the months ahead. Stay tuned to our blog to see what’s next!
