Green Initiatives in the Corporate World

In today’s corporate society, sustainability is a crucial element, and companies like Phoenix Mecano are welcoming sustainable practices. Our Green Team, a dedicated group of individuals from various departments, is driving the initiative towards an earth-friendly future. We recently sat down and chatted about sustainability, its impact on our company culture, and upcoming innovative projects..

Impact of Sustainability on Departments

Sustainability affects each department uniquely. For Ngoneh Jeng who works in procurement, this involves consolidating orders to minimize pollution and considering social and environmental factors alongside financial ones. In engineering, Camila works to monitor energy consumption and waste output in real time so the company can measure its tangible impact. Logan Spires and Adna Silva’s marketing efforts ensure that the company’s sustainability practices are visible to customers and stakeholders, reinforcing our commitment to green initiatives.

Cultivating a Culture of Sustainability

Our culture of sustainability is integral to its everyday operations. The Green Team was intentionally formed with members from various departments to include broad participation and a wide-reaching perspective. Ngoneh emphasizes that a shared culture with positive attitudes and standards creates a healthy work environment, where internal practices and our external brand fit well together. Camila added that involving employees from all levels, including shop floor operators, fosters a sense of inclusion and ownership of sustainability initiatives. Adna’s mentioned that when every employee feels part of the sustainability mission, it not only strengthens our collective commitment but also leads to innovative ideas and practices that benefit the entire organization.

Leading by Example: Tips for Companies Big and Small

We believe that all companies, regardless of size, can implement sustainable practices. Small but impactful changes, such as switching to biodegradable utensils and centralizing trash collection, can significantly reduce waste. Logan notes that these practices, while seemingly minor, accumulate to create a substantial environmental benefit.

Measuring the Impact: Quantifying Changes

We use standards like ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems) and ISO 50001 (Energy Management Systems) to measure and quantify our sustainability efforts. ISO 14001 is an internationally recognized standard that sets out the requirements for an environmental management system. It helps organizations improve their environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste, gaining a competitive advantage and the trust of stakeholders. Camila explains that this standard provides a framework for setting and tracking goals related to waste reduction and environmental impact, helping us stay accountable and communicate our progress to customers.

Future Sustainability Projects

Looking ahead, we plan to consider more initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint at both North American locations. These could include composting solutions to manage waste sustainably and further reduce our environmental footprint and renewable energy investments. Ngoneh and Camila mentioned that these projects are part of a broader effort to improve our sustainability practices continuously.

The Green Team is not only setting a positive example for other companies to follow, but it’s also actively working towards a greener and more eco-friendly future. With a strong emphasis on teamwork, innovation, and dedication, we’re building a more environmentally conscious business model. As Logan points out, every small step builds up and contributes to a larger goal, demonstrating Phoenix Mecano’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.
